Cedar Falafel & Shawarma

Unbeknownst to us downtown mortals, there’s a surprisingly decent selection of shawarma on the East Mountain. I don’t typically head up that way, but I had to make a rare trip, so might as well grab a shawarma. Cedar Falafel & Shawarma is on Upper Ottawa, in a plaza with a surprisingly good laundromat. The windows are decorated with many pictures of their Mediterranean cuisine, and large words proclaiming their food is Fresh, Healthy, and Authentic. All in all, a lot of character for a shop in a strip mall.

And character they have. The inside is well decorated with nice stone work, lights, and fake vegetation. It’s a very nice space, you can tell they’ve put a lot of work into their visuals. The menu is nice and big and easy to read. The spit is prominently displayed with some very dark good looking chicken on it. Upon my arrival to the Order Here sign, I was greeted by a nice gentlewoman who quickly took my order, and relayed it to the gentleman at the grill. After a few minutes it was ready for me, and I thanked the tandem.

Wow, this is one great shawarma! The chicken is juicy, rich, and delicious, seasoned strongly and very well. The veggies are well balanced and warmed up just enough to be soft with a bit of a crunch left. The sauces are flavourful and clean. I may have wanted a little more of them. The pita is sturdy, and holds together the entire time, without being tough.

I wasn’t sure what to expect walking into Cedar Falafel & Shawarma, and boy am I impressed. It’s a shame it’s so out of the way, but it’s nice to see a beacon of nice food shining in the cultural wasteland that is the East Mountain. Check it out if you’re in the area! (Also, Hamilton Coin Laundry is top tier if you’re in need of that service). 9/10
