Falafel February: Phoenicia Food Express

Hello friends and readers of hamiltonshawarma.com; I’ve missed you. Unfortunately, keeping a roof over my head has taken priority over buying lots of shawarmas so the website has been quiet. Falafel is generally cheaper however, and it is that time of year.

Today, we’ll be visiting the reigning champion, 2022 Shawarma of the Year winner Phoenicia Food Express. There’s been a bit of change over the past year: there’s a Bitcoin ATM now, and the fridge is proudly displaying an award from a food review website. I’m happy to add to that collection, as the good folks of Phoenicia have been awarded the 2023 hamiltonshawarma.com Shawarma of Year Award. Congratulations!

After being lightly struck by a truck in the parking lot, I was greeted by a young gentleman, he must be new. I ordered my falafel sandwich and was pleased to see his partner scooping falafel mix into balls and putting them in the fryer. Fresh falafel is the best. I had it done up the same as I’d get a shawarma, and was on my way with my sandwich in no time.

While not as good as their award winning shawarma, I was still pleased with my sandwich. There’s a couple areas for improvement though: I like my falafel to be crispy, this was rather soft. I’m not sure it is the same falafel I saw going into the fryer when I ordered. The other area is the young gentleman could have put more sauce on, this was fairly dry. That will come with experience I’m sure. Otherwise, this falafel sandwich was made with quality ingredients and is still quite good.

Unfortunately, this is when I discovered the gentleman who’s been running Phoenicia Express for years has retired. I’m happy for him, shawarma is a hard life, but his skilled hands and pride in his craft have always been appreciated and will be missed. Thank you for your service.

How will this impact their chances at a threepeat? Time will tell, but today’s falafel sandwich was good. 8/10.
